Slip cloth
is a very important part of belt sanding. In short, it
stops the back of the belt from rubbing the machine platen
or body. This can cause the belt backing to wear prematurely
and build up heat.

Belt cleaners
are an ideal tool to remove built up particles from abrasive
belts. they are pushed against the belt while it is running
and will assist in pulling out small particles from between
the abrasive mineral. Belt cleaners are available in large
or small sizes.
Engineers
felt is used (in many cases) under slip cloth. It wil
provide a soft and forgiving backup to the slip cloth
and allow a certain amount of flexibility to be offered
from the supporting platen on an abrasive belt sander.
Smooth faced contact wheels give a less aggressive
cut and therefore a finer finish. Grooved face contact
wheels allow the abrasive belt to work harder and more
aggressively.
Pneumatic
or "blow up bobbins" give the user the option
of a very soft, pliable work surface. The tyre of the
drum is inflated with air and using a flexible abrasive
belt the operator can regulate how hard or soft the pneumatic
drum becomes. By varying the pressure in the drum you
are able to run at low pressure to allow the belt to sink-in
and sand rounded shapes easily. Alternately, higher pressures
can create a convex shape.
