The range of abrasive products available to the industrial markets today is vast. Not only do you have mineral types and grades to choose from but also the option of which backing you want holding your abrasive belts or disc together.
Y Weight This strong and very robust material is used predominately where a high level of stress is asked of the abrasive belt. Y weight product will withstand torturous conditions in metal and wood working. This product is thick and rigid which provides ultimate support for the abrasive mineral. This makes any Y weight product suitable for the more aggressive high stock removal applications.
X Weight one of the most common of all the abrasive belts manufactured in Australia. X weight is similar to Y weight due to the high strength offered by the product. It is slightly more flexible which in turn will suit a large part of the applications in the metal and wood working industries
E,F & J Weight With an incredible level of flexibility this family of very unusual products is ideal in sanding or finishing curved or odd shaped surfaces. This is relevant to industries such as metal plating and polishing where the work is oddly shaped or contoured. Flexible product is also very effective on profile sanding timbers that have been turned and machined
Paper Paper is used widely in abrasive belt, roll, sheet and disc manufacture. It is not as strong as cloth but in many ways it is more than adequate to get the job done. The paper backing comes in a wide variety of weights used for sanding sheets or discs. It is common to use an A weight paper since it is strong enough to hold the product together and do the job. In the case of an abrasive belt a heavier E or F weight paper would be used for its strength to withstand the stress of being used on various types of sanding machines.

Grain Types

As with backings there are a number of options when making your decision on the correct type of abrasive for the job. The criteria is never set in concrete but it could be looked at like this:

  • How much material do I want to remove?
  • How important is the finish I will be left with?
  • Is the material I am working with hard, soft, resinous or dry?
  • What tools do I have or need to do the job?
  • Are the tools running at the right speed?

With these questions answered you can use the following information to help you choose the right product for your application or simply contact us if you need our assistance!

Aluminium Oxide

Aluminium Oxide
This mineral type is suitable both for metal and wood. It is a strong mineral that will give a shallow yet consistent scratch pattern and offer long cut life under a range of working conditions.

Zirconia Alumina

Zirconia Alumina
Zirconia is by comparison a hard and sharp mineral. It is very aggressive in stock removal and at home under much higher working pressure. It is common to see Zirconia used in many aspects of work on stainless steel. The resistance provided is ideal to keep a Zirconia product cutting.
Zirconia product will offer great value but it is important to remember that you must maintain a higher and constant pressure when using this type of product. Failure to do so can result in glazed mineral and slow cutting speeds.

Silicon Carbide Silicon Carbide
Silicon Carbide is very sharp with an aggressive cut. It is often used in wet applications in the glass industry for smoothing the jagged edge of glass sheets. Silicon Carbide is also widely used in the stainless steel coil processing industry.
Under lighter constant pressures a Silicon carbide belt product will leave a very crisp lineal grain pattern due to the sharp deep cut of the grain.
