Ehwa Diamond and CBN wheels

General information

Superabrasive diamond and CBN (cubic boron nitride) wheels were developed to meet the increased use of "difficult-to-grind" materials. Today, the development and use of these specialised grinding wheels has expanded to various industries as demand has increased and new applications are discovered.

Using only the highest quality raw materials and applying the most advanced technologies for manufacturing industrial diamond and CBN tools, EHWA Diamond Industrial have established a world-renowned reputation for high quality products, service and expertise in the industry. EHWA precision diamond / CBN tools as supplied by Australian Industrial Abrasives, meet the heavy demands of modern industry.

Consult your Australian Industrial Abrasives specialist for advice on the best product for your application.

Diamond wheels can be used to grind various materials including tungsten carbide, glass, ceramics, fibreglass, plastics, stone and abrasives. CBN wheels are used to grind high speed steels, tool & die steels, alloy steels, Aerospace alloys and hard stainless steels.

Both products are manufactured in a range of wheel shapes and specifications to suit a wide range of equipment and applications. Important in the selection of the correct diamond or CBN product are the abrasive type, grit size, grade, concentration and bond.

Diamond CBN types

Diamond CBN types

CBN types

Diamonds can be classified into two categories - natural and synthetic diamonds. since they were first introduced in 1957, synthetic diamonds have become the principal types used in diamond wheels. Different diamond grits with a range of properties and structures have been developed to suit various products and applications.

CBN is the second hardest material know to man and is synthesised in crystal form from hexagonal boron nitride. CBN grinding wheels can give high grinding rations and are superior to diamond for some applications.

Grit size

Grit size classification

Grit size classification

Diamond and CBN grits are classified as shown in the chart below. Some manufacturers use the FEPA (European) standard to denote their grit size. Following on from 325/400 grit, micron sizes are used to denote finer grits. The nominal grit size in a grinding wheel indicates the coarsest grits that are present in the wheel.

Grade

Grade

Grade

The hardness or durability of the wheel is expressed on an alphabetical scale, with "A" being the softest and "Z" the hardest. J, N and R are the grades commonly used in our diamond and CBN wheels.

Concentration

Concentration is the content of diamonds or CBN in the unit volume of a wheel. For example when the content is 25% volume, the concentration is 100, which is equivalent to 4.4 carats / cubic centimetre.
The price of a particular diamond or CBN wheel depends on the concentration as well as the shape and dimensions. The appropriate concentration to use depends on the work material, grinding conditions etc.

Bonds - Resin bond

Bonds - Resin bond

Resin bond wheels

Resin Bond wheels are the most commonly used. They have good elasticity, can produce fine surface finishes and give high grinding performance. Many types of resin-bonded diamond wheels are specially made for a specific application. These are particularly suited for the grinding of carbide tipped and inserted tooling such as Saws, Cutters, Reamers and End-mills. They are utilized in precision grinding operations on carbide dies, rolls and carbide wear parts. Resin bonds are the best choice for precision finishing of ceramics as well as grinding tungsten carbide and ceramic thermal spray coatings.

When combined with CBN, resin bonds can be used for grinding high-speed steels, tool and die steels and super alloys with a hardness greater than HRC 50.

Bonds - Vitrified bond

Bonds - Vitrified bond

Vitrified bond wheels

Vitrified bond is a ceramic bond that is extremely hard and free cutting. It provides long tool life, effective grinding and high productivity. Excellent for use on automated grinding equipment and systems. It has developed for use in many different applications including grinding high precision machine parts, bearings, gears, tools and dies, semiconductors, ceramics, cermets and cutting tools particularly those fabricated from PCD (Polycrystalline diamond) and PCBN.

Bonds - Metal bond

Bonds - Metal bond

Metal bonds

Metal bond gives superior grit retention and long life. Although it will hold form well, it tends to be slower cutting than other bond types. Used in off-hand grinding of tungsten carbide abrasive wheel, cutting and grinding of hard and brittle materials such as ceramics, glass, quartz, ferrite, stone and graphite.
